Where to Stay in Ayutthaya: Which Area Suits You

The historical island, the riverside or near the station: the ruined capital an hour from Bangkok, whether to stay the night, and where to book.

Ayutthaya

Quick answer

The island, inside the old city, to cycle between the ruins from your door. The riverside for hotels facing the temples across the water. Near the station, off the island, for the cheapest option and the earliest train back to Bangkok.

The areas, one by one

The island

The old capital sits on an island ringed by three rivers, and most of the major ruins are inside it. Staying here means seeing them at dawn and at dusk, when the day-trip buses from Bangkok have not arrived or have left.

Skip it if: you want a resort with a pool and a view.

Riverside

Hotels along the rivers that surround the island, several facing temples across the water. The most comfortable end of Ayutthaya, and the one that makes an overnight stay feel like more than a stopover.

Skip it if: you are on a tight budget.

See stays in Riverside

Near the station

Across the river from the island, around the railway station and the market. Cheaper guesthouses, an easy morning train to Bangkok or the north, and a short ferry across to the ruins.

Skip it if: you want to step out of your hotel into the old city.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

Is Ayutthaya a day trip or an overnight stay?

Both work. A day trip from Bangkok covers the main temples; a night lets you see them at dawn and lit up in the evening, without the coach groups.

How do you get to Ayutthaya from Bangkok?

By train in under two hours, by minivan, or on an organised day tour, some of which return by boat along the river.

Why is Ayutthaya important?

It was the capital of Siam for around four centuries until the city was sacked in 1767. The ruins of the old city are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

How do you get around the ruins?

By bicycle or tuk-tuk. The site is flat and spread across the island, and the main temples are a few minutes apart from each other.
