The areas, one by one

Pai town

A few streets around the walking street, where the evening market, most of the cafés and the cheaper guesthouses are. You can spend a week here without needing transport, which is rare in this part of Thailand.

Skip it if: you want quiet evenings: the market runs late.

Riverside

Along the Pai river, just across the bamboo bridge from the centre. Bungalows and small resorts set back from the road, close enough to walk to dinner and far enough to sleep.

Skip it if: you want a hotel with air conditioning and a lift.

Countryside

The valley around Pai, where the better-known resorts sit among rice fields and hills, near the hot springs and the canyon. You will want a scooter or a driver for everything, including dinner.

Skip it if: you do not ride and do not want to depend on drivers.

Arriving and getting around

  • The road from Chiang Mai · Three hours, 762 curves — Minivans run all day from Chiang Mai. The road is famous for its curves: if you are prone to motion sickness, take the front seat and travel in the morning.
  • Transfers · From Chiang Mai — A private car costs more than the minivan and stops when you want to, which matters on this road.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

How do you get to Pai?

By road from Chiang Mai, about three hours by minivan on a mountain road with several hundred bends. There is no regular scheduled flight for visitors.

How many days in Pai?

Two or three nights suits most people; the point of Pai is to slow down, and people who like it tend to stay longer than planned.

Is Pai cold?

In the cool season, roughly December and January, mornings can be genuinely cold by Thai standards. Bring a layer: many bungalows have no heating.

Pai or Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai is a city with temples, food and things to do. Pai is a small town in a valley with very little to do, deliberately. Most people do both, in that order.
