Skip it if: you want modern comfort and quiet nights.

Nimman

West of the Old City, near the university. Coffee shops, coworking spaces, design hotels and the largest concentration of long-stay visitors in the north.

Skip it if: you came for temples: they are a ride away.

Where locals actually go

Places we can point to by name, checked on the date below. No ratings, no sponsored entries: if a listing ever becomes a paid partnership, it will say so on this page.

Before you book

  • Burning season · Roughly February to April — Agricultural burning across the north pushes air quality to levels that regularly rank among the worst in the world. Hotels will not mention it. Check current readings before committing to a long stay.
  • Getting there · From Bangkok — An hour by plane or a night on the sleeper train. Both are cheap; the train is the better story and costs you an evening.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?

Three to four covers the temples, a market or two and a day trip. Long-stay visitors often end up staying months, which tells you something.

Old City or Nimman?

Old City if you want to walk to temples and spend less. Nimman if you are working remotely and care about cafés, coworking and newer rooms.

When should I avoid Chiang Mai?

Roughly February to April, during the burning season, when air quality in the north deteriorates sharply. It is the one period locals will tell you to skip.

Do I need a scooter in Chiang Mai?

Not in the Old City. Elsewhere it helps, though Chiang Mai has far more ride-hailing and songthaew coverage than the Thai islands.
