Where to Stay in Koh Phangan: Which Area Suits You

Srithanu, Thong Sala or Haad Rin: the island behind the full moon party, who each side suits, and where to book.

Koh Phangan

Quick answer

Srithanu, on the west coast, for the yoga and long-stay side of the island and calm, shallow water. Thong Sala, the main town and pier, if you want everything practical within reach. Haad Rin only if the full moon party is the point of the trip.

02 / Areas

The areas, one by one

Srithanu

The west coast village that turned Koh Phangan into a wellness destination: yoga schools, vegetarian cafés and a long-stay crowd that has little to do with the party at the other end of the island. Shallow, sheltered water and the sunset side of the island.

Skip it if: you came for nightlife: evenings here end early.

Thong Sala

Where the ferries land and where the island's night market, banks and shops are. Useful as a base if you plan to move around by scooter, and the easiest place to be for an early boat.

Skip it if: you want to walk out of your room onto sand.

Haad Rin

The south-eastern tip, home to the beach where the full moon party happens. In the days around it, this is one of the busiest beaches in Thailand; the rest of the month it is a fairly ordinary resort beach with a hangover.

Skip it if: you want a quiet week that happens to include a full moon.

Arriving and getting around

  • Ferry from Koh Samui or Surat Thani · Thong Sala pier — There is no airport on Koh Phangan. Most visitors fly to Koh Samui and take the ferry, or come overland to Surat Thani and cross from there.
  • Before you ride · Scooters and cover — The island's hills are steep and the roads unforgiving; scooter accidents are the most common reason visitors here need medical cover.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

When is the full moon party?

On or around the full moon each month, at Haad Rin. Dates shift and are occasionally moved for religious holidays, so check the current calendar before fixing a trip around it.

Is Koh Phangan only about the party?

No. Most of the island is quiet, and the west and north coasts have a large wellness and long-stay community that never goes near Haad Rin.

Koh Phangan or Koh Samui?

Samui has an airport, more resorts and more comfort. Phangan is cheaper, rougher and more relaxed, with better beaches for the money if you do not need a pool bar.

What is the best season?

Koh Phangan is in the Gulf: broadly good from February to September, with the heaviest rain from October to December, the opposite of Phuket and Krabi.
