The areas, one by one

Khao Lak

An hour north of Phuket airport: long, uncrowded beaches and resorts built for families, without Phuket's traffic or nightlife. Dry season only.

Skip it if: May to October, when the sea is rough and much closes.

Bophut

Koh Samui's family beach: calm water, Fisherman's Village to walk in the evening, and an airport twenty minutes away, which matters with children.

Skip it if: you want the cheapest option: Samui costs more than the mainland.

Hua Hin

A few hours by road from Bangkok, with a shallow, calm sea and resorts used to Thai families. Khao Takiab, at the south end, is the quieter part.

Skip it if: you want island scenery or clear water for snorkelling.

Kata

Phuket's easiest family beach: a curved bay, a town with restaurants and pharmacies behind it, and the airport under an hour away.

Skip it if: the wet season, when swimming is often unsafe.

Practical

  • Airport transfers with car seats · On arrival — Car seats are not standard in Thai taxis. A pre-booked transfer is the only reliable way to get one.

  • Villas with a pool · Koh Samui and Phuket — A two- or three-bedroom villa with a fenced pool often costs less than two hotel rooms for a family.

Frequently asked

Which part of Thailand is best for families?

Khao Lak in the dry season, Koh Samui the rest of the year, and Hua Hin if you would rather not fly. All three have calm water and resorts used to children.

Is Phuket good for children?

Parts of it. Kata and Bang Tao work well; Patong does not. Khao Lak, an hour north, is quieter still.

What about the season?

The same rule as everywhere in Thailand: Andaman side (Khao Lak, Phuket) from November to April, Gulf side (Samui) the rest of the year, Hua Hin any month.
