02 / Areas

The areas, one by one

Patong

The busiest beach on the island and the centre of its nightlife. Everything is close and cheap, and it never really stops.

Skip it if: you are travelling with children or you want to sleep early.

See stays in Patong

Kata and Karon

South of Patong, quieter but still with enough restaurants and shops to avoid feeling stranded. The usual compromise for a first trip.

Skip it if: you want nightlife within walking distance.

See stays in Kata and Karon

Bang Tao

A long beach on the north-west coast, with the biggest resort complexes on the island and an increasingly international residential scene behind them.

Skip it if: you are on a budget or you want local life on your doorstep.

See stays in Bang Tao

Phuket Old Town

Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés and the best food on the island, with no beach at all. Worth a night or two even if you are staying by the sea.

Skip it if: your priority is swimming.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

Which part of Phuket is best for families?

Kata, Karon or the Bang Tao area: calmer beaches, more space, and far less nightlife noise than Patong.

Is Patong worth staying in?

For one or two nights if you want the nightlife. As a base for a week it wears thin for most visitors.

How far is the airport?

It sits in the north of the island. Bang Tao is close, Patong is roughly an hour, and the southern beaches are longer still.

Phuket or Krabi?

Phuket has the airport, the infrastructure and the choice. Krabi has the cliffs and a calmer feel. Many trips do a few days in each, connected by boat or bus.
