Getting from Bangkok Airport to the City

Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, train, taxi or a booked car: the options compared, what each one really involves, and when the choice actually matters.

Getting from Bangkok Airport to the City

Quick answer

By day, from Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link beats everything on price and predictability. With luggage, at night, or with a family, a car booked in advance removes the queue and the negotiation. The metered taxi is fine if you insist on the meter.

Airport Rail Link

A direct line from Suvarnabhumi into the city, immune to the traffic that makes every other option unpredictable. It ends at Phaya Thai, where you change to the Skytrain, which is the part people forget when they have two suitcases.

Skip it if: you land late at night, or you are carrying more than you can lift up a flight of stairs.

Metered taxi

Take the official rank, not an offer in the arrivals hall. Expect the meter, plus an airport surcharge and any tolls, which the driver pays and you reimburse. If a driver refuses the meter and quotes a flat price, walk to the next car.

Skip it if: you want a fixed price known in advance.

Car booked in advance

A driver waiting with your name, a price agreed before you land and no negotiation at two in the morning. It costs more than the meter and buys away the part of the journey people remember badly.

Skip it if: you are travelling light in the middle of the day.

Don Mueang, the other airport

Bangkok's second airport handles many regional and low-cost flights. It has no Airport Rail Link, but a station on the SRT Red Line commuter train, and it sits on the opposite side of the city from Suvarnabhumi. Moving between the two takes well over an hour, so check which one each of your flights uses.

Skip it if: you assumed both airports work the same way.

Worth knowing

  • Traffic decides, not distance · Any road option — The same trip can take thirty minutes or ninety depending on the hour. The train is the only option immune to this.
  • Very early flight? · Sleeping near the airport — For a departure before dawn, a night beside the airport often costs less than a night in town plus a car at four in the morning, and you sleep instead of watching the clock.

  • Arriving in Phuket instead? · Phuket International — Same logic, no train at all: the island runs on cars, and the southern beaches are well over an hour from the terminal.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

What is the cheapest way from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok?

The Airport Rail Link, by a wide margin, and it is also the most predictable because it does not sit in traffic. The trade-off is the change onto the Skytrain at the end and the stairs that come with luggage.

Should I book a transfer in advance?

For a night arrival, a first visit, or if you are travelling with children, yes: it removes the queue and the price negotiation at the worst possible moment. Otherwise the official taxi rank works fine.

How long does the journey take?

Around half an hour by train. By road, anything from thirty to ninety minutes depending on the hour, which is why a fixed departure time matters more than the distance.

Which airport will I land at?

Most long-haul flights use Suvarnabhumi, most regional and low-cost flights use Don Mueang. They are on opposite sides of the city, so check before booking a hotel or a connecting flight.
