Where to Stay in Hua Hin: Which Area Suits You

The town, Khao Takiab or Cha-am: the beach you can drive to from Bangkok, who each part suits, and where to book.

Hua Hin

Quick answer

Hua Hin town for the main beach, the night markets and the railway station on foot. Khao Takiab, just south, for a quieter beach under the temple hill. Cha-am, to the north, for a cheaper, more Thai seaside town.

02 / Areas

The areas, one by one

Hua Hin town

The old royal resort town: a long beach, a lively night market, the wooden railway station and most of the hotels within walking distance of each other. Popular with Bangkok weekenders and older travellers.

Skip it if: you want nightlife in the island sense.

Khao Takiab

The hill with the temple and the monkeys at the south end of the bay, and the beach below it. Calmer than the town, with newer resorts and condos, and a short ride back to the markets.

Skip it if: you want to walk to the night market.

Cha-am

A separate town north of Hua Hin, where Thai families come for the weekend. Cheaper, less polished, with a long beach lined with umbrellas and seafood stalls rather than resorts.

Skip it if: you want international restaurants and hotel polish.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

Is Hua Hin worth visiting?

For a beach within reach of Bangkok without a flight, yes: it is calm, easy and well suited to families and older travellers. It is not the place for island scenery or nightlife.

How far is Hua Hin from Bangkok?

Around two and a half to three hours by road, longer on a Friday evening when Bangkok leaves for the weekend.

Can you swim in Hua Hin?

Yes, the Gulf here is generally calm and shallow. The beach is long and wide rather than spectacular, and the water is not as clear as the islands.

Hua Hin or Pattaya?

Both are drivable from Bangkok. Hua Hin is quieter, more family-oriented and has a royal, old-fashioned reputation. Pattaya is louder and built around nightlife.
