02 / Areas

The areas, one by one

Sukhumvit

The long avenue served by the Skytrain, with the widest choice of hotels at every price. Staying on the line is what makes Bangkok manageable.

Skip it if: you want the old town on your doorstep.

Old City

Inside the square moat: temples, guesthouses and markets within walking distance. The obvious base for a first visit.

Skip it if: you want the café scene: that is Nimman, a short ride west.

Kata

A curved beach with a real town behind it, calmer than Patong and easier than the north. The usual first-trip beach on the Andaman side.

Skip it if: you are travelling between May and October: wrong coast for the season.

Ao Nang

The base for Railay and the islands, with limestone cliffs at the end of the beach and longtail boats to everything else.

Skip it if: you want a resort beach to swim from.

Bophut

Fisherman's Village and its beach, on the Gulf side: the right coast when the Andaman is in its rainy season.

Skip it if: you want the busiest beach: that is Chaweng.

Getting between stops

  • Flights and trains · Bangkok to Chiang Mai and the beaches — Domestic flights are cheap and short; the overnight train to Chiang Mai is the memorable option if you have the time.
  • Airport transfers · Every arrival — Worth booking for late arrivals, when the queues and the negotiation are at their worst.

06 / Questions

Frequently asked

How long do you need for a first trip to Thailand?

Two weeks covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai and one beach without rushing. Ten days works if you drop either the north or the beach.

Which beach for a first trip?

It depends on the month, not on taste: the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) from November to April, the Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan) roughly February to September.

Bangkok first or last?

First: it is where you land, and two or three nights are enough to get your bearings before slowing down elsewhere.
