Bophut
An old fishing village turned restaurant strip, on the north coast. Calmer than Chaweng, with the best concentration of places to eat.
Skip it if: you want a wide swimming beach: the water here is shallow at low tide.
Lamai
South of Chaweng, with a good beach and noticeably lower prices. The sensible choice if the budget matters and you still want the sea.
Skip it if: you want polish.

- Season · Gulf calendar — Samui does not follow the Andaman seasons. Its heaviest rain falls roughly from October to December, exactly when Phuket and Krabi are at their best.
- Getting there · Flights and boats — The island has its own airport, but flights into it are expensive. The cheaper route is a flight to Surat Thani and a ferry, which costs half a day.

Which beach is best in Koh Samui?
Chaweng for choice and life, Bophut for eating well in a calmer setting, Lamai for value. Most first visits work well in Chaweng or Bophut.
When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?
Broadly February to September. October to December brings the heaviest rain on the Gulf side, which is the opposite of the Andaman coast.
Is Koh Samui expensive?
More than the mainland and more than Koh Phangan, largely because of the flights. Arriving by ferry from Surat Thani cuts the cost substantially.
Samui or Koh Phangan?
Samui has the airport, the resorts and the infrastructure. Koh Phangan is cheaper and quieter outside party weeks, with a large wellness and long-stay community.
